EU urges UN to keep up talks on Khmer Rouge trials

The European Union has urged the United Nations not to give up on negotiations with Cambodia over establishing a tribunal for former Khmer Rouge leaders accused of genocide.

Earlier this month, the U-N ended more than four years of talks over setting up a court to try leaders of the radical regime, saying Phnom Penh could not guarantee the tribunal's independence.

In a statement, the E-U says the U-N should keep open the possibility of renewing negotiations to guarantee the establishment of an internationally credible tribunal.

So far, none of the former Khmer Rouge leaders have stood trial.
