Norway clinches ceasefire deal in Sri Lanka
Norway has clinched a historic open-ended ceasefire in Sri Lanka, just hours after Tamil Tiger rebels and government forces fought a fierce sea battle that killed at least three sailors.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's government gave its consent to a document prepared by Norway after talks with officials as well as the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
The tigers also agreed to the cessation of hostilities pact which will come into effect after Norway makes a formal announcement that it has received the agreement of both parties.
The truce deal was struck despite a heavy naval battle off the island's northeastern coast on Thursday between government forces and a flotilla of Tiger boats, which left three sailors dead. The latest ceasefire is the first bilateral truce in seven years.
