Clinton criticised for addressing Australian conference on China The former American President Bill Clinton has been criticised for addressing a conference in the Australian city of Sydney on the peaceful reunification of Taiwan with mainland China. "Outside the conference, tempers flared when a group of Pro China supporters walked through a large group of Australian Taiwanese protesters carrying a banner which read Destroy Taiwanese Independence ... Reunify China. Inside the conference Bill Clinton said keeping politics outside the reunification process was the only way for a peaceful resolution. "Politicians should be very careful not to make decisions that will interrupt what is clearly a peaceful and mutually beneficial thing." But prominent China dissident in exile Wei Jing Sheng says its not appropriate for a former president to address such a conference". 24/02/2002 12:46:32 | ABC Radio Australia News
