UN suspends repatriation of Vietnamese refugees from Cambodia
The United Nations has temporarily halted the repatriation of Vietnamese hill tribes from Cambodia following what it calls incidents which have placed in doubt the voluntary nature of the operation.
A spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Kris Janowski, says the UN is awaiting clarification from the Vietnamese and Cambodian governments before continuing its work.
Mr Janowski says visits by Vietnamese and Cambodian government representatives to the refugee camps are threatening the voluntary nature of the project.
Around 1,000 hill tribe refugees remain under UN protection in camps in Cambodia after fleeing an army clampdown on a wave of protest in the central highlands early last year.
