Sam Rainsy rally over alleged Cambodian electoral fraud fizzles
A rally called by Cambodian opposition leader Sam Rainsy to protest against alleged electoral fraud has reportedly failed to attract its hoped-for support.
The Sam Rainsy Party called the public demonstration to demand that the National Election Committee recount ballots from the February 3rd local elections which were declared null and void in six communes.
Sam Rainsy claimed 1,000 people attended the rally which marched through the capital, on government officies and to the European Union mission. However, police and independent witnesses put the numbers at between 250 and 300. The ruling Cambodian People's Party dominated the local district elections -- known as commune elections -- held in 1,621 communes.
According to unofficial results the CPP won control 1,600 communes, SRP 13 and the royalist FUNINPEC party the remainder.
The final results are expected to be announced on Monday.
