Concerned US urges Thailand to respect media freedom
The United States has expressed concern about threats from the Thai government to deport foreign journalists, one of whom is a U-S citizen, urging Bangkok to uphold press freedom.
A State Department spokesman Richard Boucher says America's ambassador to Thailand, Darryl Johnson, raised the issue in a meeting in Bangkok on Monday with Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra.
American Shawn Crispin and Briton, Rodney Tasker, both of whom work for the Hong Kong-based Far Eastern Economic Review, were placed on an immigration blacklist and served deportation orders.
Thai police ordered the seizure of the January 10th edition over an article on relations between Thailand's monarchy and Mr Thaksin, saying it violated local press laws.
Mr Thaksin says the media has its freedom as long as the reports do not affect national security.
