Aust FM says tri-lateral talks chance for peaceful region

Australia's Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, says tri-lateral talkswith Indonesia and East Timor are an historic chance to achieve a peaceful region.

The three-way meeting is underway in Bali, as the parties discuss the future and security of an independent East Timor.

Mr Downer says Australia wants to make the conference a permanent institution after East Timor's independence in May:

"I'm very positive about it, very optimistic about it. I'm sure the talks will go well, but more than that we'll put into place a process and I hope that we will have a fairly consistent patters of meetings over the years ahead."
