Indian troops deploy in Gujarat to supress riots

Troops are arriving in India's riot-torn western state of Gujarat in an effort to crush religious violence in which more than 190 people have been killed.

133 people died in rioting in the state's main city, Ahmedabad and the eye of the violence, the town of Godhra.

The rioting erupted after a suspected Muslim mob torched a train carrying Hindu devotees in Godhra on Wednesday, burning alive 58 people, mostly women and children, returning from a trip to the town of Ayodhya.

Defence Minister George Fernandes is visiting Ahmedabad to assess the crisis amid fears that it will spread to other parts of the country in what is the worst religious violence in a decade. The hardline World Hindu Council, of V.H.P. has called for a nationwide strike, at the same time vowing to press on with its plans to build a temple on the ruins of a mosque in the northern town of Ayodhya in a fortnight.
