New flights for Vietnam Airlines
Vietnam's state-run flagcarrier is preparing to launch direct flights between the former imperial capital of Hue and Siem Reap, site of the historic Cambodian capital of Angkor, in a bid to promote the neighbours' main tourist draws.
Vietnam's state-run media announced the inauguration of the route after just two trial flights.
Vietnam Airlines domestic flights director Nguyen Tri Thuc confirmed the airline hoped to have the new service up and running in time for the key European summer tourist season.
Tourist arrivals in Siem Reap have soared in recent years after a slump following the regional financial crisis of 1997 as Angkor has retained its reputation as Indochina's leading attraction.
But communist Vietnam's own tourism industry has also expanded rapidly, with arrivals rising eight percent to 2.3 million last year despite the impact on the confidence of the travelling public of the terror attacks of September 11.
The ancient citadel and imperial tombs of Hue, and the beaches of the surrounding central coast, have proved one of Vietnam's principal draws.
