Japanese troops arrive in East Timor for peacekeeping duties
An advance party of Japanese troops has arrived in East Timor in what will become Tokyo's biggest ever peacekeeping operation.
About 20 demonstrators at the airport held posters demanding an apology and compensation from the Japanese government, because 40,000 Timorese died during japan's uccupation from 1942 to 45.
About 40 police from East Timor and the United Nations, which is administering the country until independence on May 20, were on duty at the airport, there were no incidents.
The Japanese engineering battalion will take over from Pakistani and Bangladeshi troops in the multinational peacekeeping force and will repair roads and bridges.
