Burma reportedly cancels visit by UN special envoy
The visit by UN special envoy to Burma Razali Ismail, expected to start Tuesday, has been cancelled.
Burma's foreign ministry says it received a message from Razali saying he was cancelling his trip, according to the sources.
However, teh AFP news agency quotes UN sources as saying Rangoon was responsible for the cancellation.
The veteran Malaysian diplomat was scheduled to meet first secretary of the State Peace and Development Council, General Khin Nyunt, as well as three other ministers. In what would have been his seventh visit to the military-ruled country since April 2000, Mr Razali had been expected to make efforts to revitalise the long-running talks between the junta and the opposition.
Mr Razali has been instrumental in facilitating the talks on national reconciliation between the junta and opposition National League for Democracy, led by Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
The cancellation comes after an alleged attempted coup against the military regime was uncovered on March 7th, leading to the arrests of the son-in-law and three grandsons of former dictator, 92-year-old Ne Win.
