Vietnam losing 55 people a day to tuberculosis
And, in remarks published on World TB Day, the head of Vietnam's tuberculosis institute says the disease claims 20,000 lives in Vietnam every year.
Some 145,000 Vietnamese contract TB every year, and on average 55 people die of the disease each day.
The AFP news agency says the Vietnamese Government spends about 13 million dollars a year fighting TB, which mainly afflicts impoverished people in the Mekong delta and those living in remote mountainous areas.
Vietnam's target is to reduce the incidence of TB by five per cent a year.
The World Health Organisation says the highest levels of TB in the Asia-Pacific region are found in Cambodia, China, Laos, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Vietnam -- all countries with high levels of poverty.
