South Korea to begin peace talks with the North
South Korea says it will send an envoy to Pyongyang to try to end months of deadlock in its "Sunshine Policy" of engaging North Korea.
In a surprise move, President Kim Dae-jung said he would send close adviser Lim Dong-won to Pyongyang for fresh talks that would be conducted "with patience and in a bold manner".
Official North-South talks have been stalled since a ministerial meeting broke down last November and under President George W Bush's tougher stance on North Korea's weapons proliferation and human rights record. Kim Dae Jung says teh aim of the talks is to start with simple problems and then build up to eventual unification.
