China's Premier again warns US on ties with Taiwan
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji has urged the United States not to derail bilateral relations through its policies towards Taiwan.
In a meeting with US Congressmen, Adam Smith, Mr Zhu said Taiwan was the most important and sensitive issue between the two countries.
He urged Washington to honour its commitments on the 'one China' issue and to "beware of sending the wrong signals" to forces seeking the independence of Taiwan.
Although Taiwan has enjoyed effective independence since Nationalist forces fled there in 1949 following defeat in China's civil war, Beijing insists the island is an integral part of its territory.
Mr Zhu's comments warning Washington to toe Beijing's line on Taiwan were the second in as many days. On Tuesday the Chinese premier, in a meeting with two US senators, blasted Washington for allowing Taiwan's defense minister to attend a recent conference in Florida.
