Russia to cooperate with India in peaceful use of nuclear energy
Russia will cooperate with India in the peaceful use of nuclear energy despite pressure not to do so.
Winding up a two day visit to New Dehli, Russia's top security official, Vladimir Rushailo, said Moscow would continue to provide assistance to India on nuclear energy.
The United States has in the past objected to Russian assistance to Indian nuclear plants, saying it violated Moscow's commitments to non-proliferation . Russia is helping India build two 1,000-megawatt nuclear power reactors in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.
The agreement on the reactors was signed in 1999, a year after India shocked the world by conducting five nuclear tests.
The United States slapped restrictions on India after the tests, most of which were lifted last year.
