Burma "considering" releasing Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest
Burma says it is considering freeing Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest to spur long-running UN-brokered talks with the opposition aimed at bringing democracy to the military-ruled country.
Foreign Minister Win Aung made the statement to Reuters news agency, but gave no indication of when the opposition leader might be freed.
The talks begun in late 2000 have yielded the release of over 250 political prisoners and some freedom for Ms Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party to reopen offices, but have faltered in recent months. The NLD says progress is too slow and has demanded the immediate release of its leader.
UN envoy Razali Ismail is due to visit Burma this month in a bid to kickstart the talks, which he initiated more than 18 months ago.
