Afghan police make arrests in attempt to kill defence minister

Afghan police have made a series of arrests over an apparent assassination bid against Defence Minister Mohammad Qasim Fahim.

At least four people are believed to have been killed and some 50 injured in the attack on Monday in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

Meanwhile, the British contingent in the international peacekeeping force ISAF, suffered its first casualty, a soldier was accidentally shot and killed while on patrol in Kabul.

Britain's spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force, Colonel Neal Peckham, says the incident was an accident.

While the matter is under full investigation by the Royal Military Police we are satisfied that this regrettable incident did not involve any party outside of ISAF. All members of ISAF are saddened at this incident but will not be swayed from continuing to meet fully their military duties.
