Taiwan to allow books to be imported from China
Taiwan will allow books to be imported from China to further enhance cultural exchanges.
The books will be reviewed by the Government Information Office after entering Taiwan.
The Office will have the power to ban the sale of the imported books if they are deemed to be propaganda or violate certain social norms. But imports of magazines and newspapers will still be banned as they include advertising and Taiwan does not allow Chinese advertisements.
Cultural and business contacts between Taiwan and China have flourished after Taipei allowed civilian exchanges with the mainland in 1987, despite the fact that the two sides are rivals. Taiwan and China split in 1949 following a civil war.
