Senior US envoy hold talks in China over defence shield
A senior American envoy has held talks with Chinese officials in a bid to convince them that Washington's plans for a missile defence shield were not aimed at containing China's military power.
US Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly struck a positive note after wrapping up two rounds of discussions, while the Chinese side agreed to continue consultations on the missile shield despite its ardent hostility to the project.
Mr Kelly described his meetings as "excellent" as he returned to the US embassy after talks with China's top arms control official Sha Zukang, as well as vice foreign ministers Wang Yi and Li Zhaoxing.
However he declined to say if he had achieved any concrete results.
The Xinhau news agency described the talks as "frank" - and expressed willingness to continue consultations.
Earlier foreign ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi reiterated China's opposition to the National Missile Defence shield - saying it would endanger strategic balance and stability, and trigger a new global arms race.
