UN refugee agency will not return to West Timor
The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has told the Indonesian government it will not send staff back to West Timor.
The local Military Commander says he received an official letter from the refugee agency confirming the decision.
He says the letter also says that a recent registration showed that more than 90% of the East Timorese refugees wanted to stay in Indonesia.
However, he adds that if the refugees wish to return to East Timor, the UNHCR will assist them until they can support themselves.
The provincial government will stop giving meal allowances to the refugees from the start of next January.
All the refugee camps in West Timor will be closed down and the refugees will be requested to stay in other places through the government's relocation programs.
