Indon general denies role in East Timor violence

An Indonesian general has denied responsibility for the violence which engulfed East Timor in 1999 after being ordered by an American court to pay 66 million U-S dollars in damages to the victims.

General Johnny Lumintang has been accused of crimes against humanity in East Timor after it voted for independence from Indonesia in August 1999.

A group of unnamed plaintiffs in the U-S action claim that top Indonesian officers, including General Lumintang, planned and supervised the militia violence.

Human rights campaigners have welcomed the ruling, saying those responsible for the devastation of East Timor must be held accountable.
