Indonesian president defends economic record

Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri has defended her government's economic performance, saying her administration had addressed the country's most urgent problems.

In an address to the People's Consultative Assembly, Megawati said the economic problems facing the country had accumulated since the economic slump of 1997, were complex and had no quick-fixes.

She said, during the last 100 days, her cabinet had addressed problems that required immediate solutions.

She cited specifically the signing in August of a letter of intent with the International Monetary Fund and the upcoming meeting of the Consultative Group on Indonesia.
