Bangladesh FM leaves for talks in Washington
Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Badruddoza Chowdhury has left for the United States in the first high-level contact with Washington since an Islamist-allied government took power in Dhaka. Officials say Mr Chowdhury, the top cabinet minister in Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's coalition, is due to meet US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
The talks, scheduled for Tuesday, will cover the US-led global campaign against terrorism as well as trade issues, with Bangladesh's main export, garments, suffering from the US downturn. Bangladesh's readymade textile sector has slumped in the past few months due to a fall in its exports to US markets, particularly since the September 11th terrorist attacks.
