NZ Foreign minister pleased trial of alleged killer started
New Zealand's Foreign Minister Phil Goff has welcomed the start of the trial of the alleged killer of a New Zealand peacekeeper in East Timor. Pro-Indonesian militiaman Yacobus Bere admitted to reporters outside the Jakarta Court before his murder trial began on Wednesday, that he shot Private Leonard Manning to death last year. 38 year old Bere is accused of killing Private Manning on July the 24th, 2000, in an attack by a militia unit near the border with Indonesian-held West Timor.
Private Manning's body was then mutilated. The soldier was serving with a United Nations force restoring order in East Timor after pro-Indonesian militiamen ravaged the territory when it voted for independence from Indonesia in 1999.
