Taiwanese crew arrested for illegal fishing in Vanuatu
A Taiwanese fishing crew is under investigation in Vanuatu for alleged illegal fishing in the Pacific country's waters. A New Zealand air force spokeswoman says the vessel was impounded by a Vanuatu fisheries patrol boat after a New Zealand air force surveillance plane on fisheries patrol spotted the alleged illegal activity.
The spokeswoman says the Orion aircraft's crew guided the Vanuatu fisheries patrol boat to the Taiwanese vessel.
The vessel was guided back to Port Vila. She says Vanuatu authorities have since confirmed that "the fishing vessel's captain had admitted fishing illegally," but also told investigators "he was unaware of any fishing restrictions."
New Zealand and Australian long-range air force surveillance planes regularly conduct fisheries zone protection patrols around Vanuatu and other South Pacific nations.
