Taiwan's leader backs US attacks

Taiwan's leader, one of America's biggest supporters in Asia, has strongly endorsed the U.S.-led attacks on terrorism in Afghanistan.

After an emergency meeting with his security chiefs, President Chen Shui-bian gave a special televised address.

He says he has complete support for America's determination to use force against terrorists.

Mr Chen says he approves of the approach of striking the terrorists while providing humanitarian aid to civilians and refugees in Afghanistan.

The president says the island's military and security forces are on high alert for any possible security threats and he urges the nation's people to be calm.

Taiwan has offered to assist in the anti-terrorist campaign, but Washington has yet to accept the offer.
