Taiwan brans China "barbaric" over participation in APEC meeting
Taiwan has branded China "barbaric" and a "bully" in the way it is handling the island's participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Shanghai. Even after US President George W. Bush and Russia's Vladimir Putin had arrived for the weekend's summit, the two rivals remained at odds over who should represent the island. Taiwan's Foreign Minister, Tien Hung-mao says Taiwan's protests against moves by mainland China to "dwarf" Taipei's status.
He says the behavior of mainland China, which he said is close to "being barbaric" has violated the APEC spirit.
However, Mr Tien did not say whether Taiwan would boycott the meet or send an economic decision maker as demanded by the host country. China has said Taiwan should adhere to a 1991 memorandum of understanding and past practice under which economic rather than political figures have represented the island at APEC summits.
