Tamil Tiger rebels attack security checkpoint in Batticaloa

Tamil Tiger rebels have attacked a security checkpoint in a clash that has left one policeman and a civilian dead.

Police say the civilian was killed by police cross fire and the rebels retreated into the jungle near the eastern town of Batticaloa after the gunbattle.

In an earlier incident, anti-terrorism commandoes shot and killed two motorcyclists near Batticaloa after the riders ignored an order to stop.

The military has declined to say whether either was linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

A military official said the motorcycle aroused suspicion among the commandoes because it had no registration number.
