EU expresses fears over Sri Lankan elections
The European Union has expressed fears that Sri Lanka's December parliamentary election could be more violent than last year's when 65 people were killed and many more wounded. An EU election observer mission said they were concerned that there could be more violent incidents in the run up to the December 5th elections and urged political parties to restrain their supporters.
The head of the EU observer mission, John Cushnahan, said his talks with election officials, political parties and other sources suggested that this year's election would be marred by violence.
He urged Sri Lanka's political parties to agree on a "code of conduct" and also expressed disappointment that their recommendations after observing last year's elections had not been implemented. The EU mission had recommended several measures, including a system to prevent the abuse of state resources for party campaigning by those in power and a better investigation of election-related complaints.
