Chinese university students jailed for downloading Falungong website
Six Chinese university students have been jailed for downloading and disseminating material from the website of the banned Falungong spiritual group.
A Beijing court sentenced the scholars from prestigious Tsinghua University on December 13 to prison terms ranging from three to 12 years.
Newsagencies reported they were convicted of "using an evil sect" to post and distribute Falungong materials on Beijing streets. A group of 32 overseas Tsinghua University graduates have written an open letter in protest of the sentencing.
They've called on Premier Zhu Rongji to put an end to "the persecution" of Falungong followers. China outlawed the Falungong in July 1999. The ban led to daily protests by group members in Beijing's centrally located Tiananmen Square.
