Twenty seven die in north China mine blast

The death toll from a gas explosion at a gold mine in southern China has risen to 27.

The latest toll brings the number of miners killed in five separate accidents in Shanxi province this month to 99.

The manager of the mine and two others have been detained in connection with the accident after a government order to shut down the mine was ignored.

All small coal mines in the region were ordered to shut for safety inspections following four earlier gas blasts.
