China jails seven for people smuggling

A Chinese court has sentenced seven people to prison terms of between two and 15 years for trying to smuggle more than 40 would-be illegal migrants to Japan.

The group charged migrants between 25 and 37-thousand dollars each for the attempt in May to sneak them into Japan from northeastern China.

The China Daily newspaper says the effort was foiled by police.

Chinese authorities have in the past year intensified efforts to curb the lucrative people-smuggling trade, punishing leaders with sentences of up to life imprisonment.
