Taiwan president seeks parliamentary reform ahead of polls
Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian has pledged to scale back the country's parliament in an effort to streamline bureaucracy and boost government efficiency. Under the reforms, the parliament would be reduced from 225 seats to 150. President Chen made the pledge while meeting a group of pro-reform civilian activists only days ahead of Taiwan's parliamentary elections.
Reform campaigners also want to extend the term of parliamentarians from three to four years to match the four-year term of the president. Calls for reform have been growing as the public grows increasingly dissatisfied with the generally poor performance of legislators.
