Four arrested over contaminated waste shipments to China and Australia

In Taiwan, four people have been arrested for allegedly shipping up to 1,000 tonnes of copper-contaminated waste to Australia and China.

The Environmental Protection Administration says three containers loaded with industrial waste bound for China and Australia were seized but the mastermind named Tseng Sheng-feng is still at large.

Reuters newsagency reported Tseng, 44, is suspected of being paid by factories to collect the contaminated waste then organising for it to be ditched abroad.

An initial police investigation indicated the group might have shipped as many as 20 containers of waste to China and Australia.

International environmental activists voiced outrage in 1999 when Taiwan's petrochemical giant Formosa Plastics was found to have dumped 2,700 tonnes of mercury-tainted waste in Cambodia.
