Phnom Penh governor rejects allegations of arson at squatters camp

Phnom Penh Governor Chea Sophara has rejected allegations that a fire which destroyed a large area of the city's slums was deliberately lit.

One man was killed and some 5,000 made homeless following the Tuesday night inferno that destroyed some 1,800 shanties in an ethnic Vietnamese squatter community along the bank of the Bassac River.

The Vietnamese are saying that arsonists would be motivated either by government officials who wanted to seize the land or by racists who look down on Vietnamese.

Chea Sophara acknowledged the city is planning new developments but says authorities would never resort to burning squatting residents out.
