UN security council welcomes Afghan accord
The United Nations Security Council has welcomed an agreement to set up an interim government in Afghanistan.
However, it postponed a decision on authorising an international military force to support it.
Security Council members met for about two hours behind closed doors to discuss a draft resolution endorsing the agreement, signed by four Afghan parties after a nine-day UN-sponsored conference held in the German city of Bonn.
In a brief statement, the members called on donor countries and organisations to reaffirm, strengthen and implement their commitment to assist with the rehabilitation, recovery and reconstruction of Afghanistan.
A second resolution, authorising an international force for Afghanistan, is likely to take longer.
