US military investigates errant bomb

The U-S military has begun investigating how a bomb was misdirected to hit its own allies on the ground in southern Afghanistan.

Three American Special Operations soldiers and five of their anti-Taliban allies were killed when a B-52 dropped a bomb close to their positions north of Kandahar.

The explosion also wounded 19 U-S soldiers and a number of Afghan fighters.

U-S President George W.Bush has extended his condolences to the families of the dead.

"I, along with all the rest of America grieve for the loss of life in Afghanistan. Three of our soldiers were killed by an inadvertant bomb. I want the families to know that they died for a noble and just cause ... that the fight against terror is noble and is just."
