Qantas targets Asia with its plans for a new single-class airline
Services to Asia are featured in start-up flights of Australia's newest airline.
Qantas says its single class, so-called "leisure carrier", Australian Airlines, will start operating in the third quarter of next year.
Initial flights will be from Cairns to Osaka, Nagoya, Singapore, Taipei, Hong Kong and Fukuoka.
The board of Qantas gave the go-ahead for the new airline at a meeting last week.
Although wholly-owned by Qantas, it will have its own separate management and will operate independently of Qantas.
An initial fleet of four Boeing 767-300 aircraft will eventually be increased to twelve .. and services will be extended to every Australian mainland capital, including Perth and Darwin.
Australian Airlines is currently negotiating with various unions on wages, conditions and work practices.
