Indonesian police beat protestors in West Papua
Indonesian police beat protesters with sticks in West Papua province to break up a demonstration over the murder last month of pro-independence chief, Theys Eluay. About 200 police reportedly hit many of the 700 protesters who had gathered outside the legislative building in the provincial capital Jayapura, east of Jakarta.
Shouting "Freedom for Papua!", the protesters marched from the province's main university on the outskirts of the port town demanding authorities find those behind the murder of Eluay.
Police said they broke up the rally because the protesters had not sought a permit for the demonstration.
President Megawati Sukarnoputri had been scheduled to visit West Papua today but the plan was postponed indefinitely due to what Jakarta officials described as rising tension in the province. Leading Papuans have urged Jakarta to quickly solve the murder of Eluay, who was found dead in his overturned car.
Police have not ruled out military involvement in the killing.
