Hamid Karzai sworn in as Afghanistan's new leader

Hamid Karzai, has been sworn in as leader of Afghanistan's interim power-sharing government in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

The new leader appealed for reconciliation and international assistance to help rebuild his war-shattered country.

A ceremony is continuing to swear in his 30-member administration to govern the country for the next six months.

About two-thousand people have gathered at the Interior Ministry for the event.

The interim administration is the first stage in a process which should culminate in elections within two and a half years.

Hamid Karzai has spoken hopefully about the process.
