Jordanian army unit starts Afghanistan humanitarian mission
A Jordanian army unit has reportedly left for Afghanistan, making Jordan the first Arab state to send a humanitarian mission to the war-torn country.
A Jordanian official has told the AFP news agency the unit comprises an unspecified number of special forces troops and around 100 military doctors and nurses.
Jordanian army engineers arrived in the strategically important northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif on December the 13th to prepare for the arrival of the troops and doctors. The contingent is to establish a field hospital in Mazar-i-Sharif.
Jordan is also expected to join an international UN-approved force to be deployed in Kabul under British command.
