Japan's jobless rate hits record 5.5 percent in November
There has been a record increase in Japan's unemployment rate.
Unemployment rose to a record high of 5.5 percent in November as the recession forced companies to cut their payrolls - and analysts warn the situation will get worse in coming months. The number of unemployed grew 410,000 to 3.5 million from a year earlier.
Yotaro Sawaki, head of the employment security bureau at the labour ministry says the statistics are reflecting the shrinkage of the job market and the progress of corporate downsizing.
The public management ministry in Tokyo reported a sharp annual increase in the number of jobless men between 45 and 54, which rose by 130 thousand from a year earlier to a record 440-thousand. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda says the recession and the government's structural reform program are pushing unemployment higher, but he says the government is determined to push on with its reforms.
