China renews call for unification in the New Year
China has entered the New Year renewing calls for reunification with Taiwan and saying it hopes to increase cross-Strait exchanges after both joined the World Trade Organisation. State media says China's President Jiang Zemin called for reunification with Taiwan in a New Year's Eve address and in a follow-up statement on New Year's day called for more visits across the Taiwan Strait.
The China Daily says at an official tea party yesterday, Mr Jiang also said the new WTO membership of both the mainland and Taiwan provided a chance to develop economic and trade relations across the Strait.
Beijing has cold-shouldered overtures from Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian, and repeated its demand that he embrace its "one China" principle - which states that Taiwan and the mainland belong to a single country - before cross-Strait talks can resume.
