US captures senior member of al Qaeda

The United States has taken custody of a man believed to be the most senior member of the al-Qaeda terrorist network captured so far.

The man - Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi - is being held at a U-S detention centre in Kandahar.

From Washington, John Shovelan reports

Pakistani forces captured al-Libi attempting the cross the border, and his identity was discovered within the last 48 hours. He's alleged to have run terrorist training camps inside Afghanistan. He's said to have trained Zaccariah Moussaoui, who's been charged with conspiring to commit the September 11 terrorist attacks. Al Libi, a Libyan, is thought to have beome a senior military strategist within al Qaeda after Mohammed Atef was killed in a US bombing raid in November. Within the next ten days some of the prisoners will be moved from Afghanistan to the US naval base at Guantanamo bay, in Cuba.
