Conservation groups criticise Japanese whale farm plan

Conservation groups have criticised a Japanese proposal for the world`s first whale farm.

Tokyo Correspondent, Mark Simkin reports.

The city of Hirado, in southern Japan, will conduct a feasibility study into the whale farm later this year. Under the plan, minke whales would be caught and taken to a fenced off area of ocean. The town says the whale farm will promote research and tourism, but environmental groups are not impressed. They`ve labelled the idea a sick joke, and say the real plan is to breed whales, and then slaughter them for food.
