Vietnam reviews policy on central highlands
Vietnam is holding a three-day review of its policies towards the central highlands as the first anniversary of a wave of unrest among the region's indigenous hill tribes nears.
Vietnam's official media says both Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Defence Minister Pham Van Tra are attending the conference which opened in the highland town of Buon Me Thuot.
The conference heard that development policies for the region need to be more closely coordinated with national defence and security maintenance, as well as the building of a firm political system.
Thousands of minority demonstrators took to the streets of the highlands' main towns last February amid anger over a massive influx of ethnic Vietnamese settlers. The mainly Christian highlanders also set up no-go zones in the countryside.
