Call for expanded security force in Afghanistan

The Chairman of Afghanistan's interim administration has called for an expanded security force in the country.

Speaking during U-N Secretary General Kofi Annan's historic visit to the Afghan capital, Hamid Karzai said there was a wide desire among Afghans for a bigger international military presence to help bring stability across the country.

A British-led security force which will eventually total about five thousand is confined to Kabul, while warlords still control the outer provinces.

However Mr Karzai has dismissed reports of fighting among rival commanders as mere skirmishes, saying such incidents will occur for sometime to come.

It's like a sick man getting out of the operation category - we're still in the ICU! Allow us to go to the recovery room and then walk like normal healthy people.
