Only Indonesian maids and plantation workers to work in Malaysia
Indonesians will be hired only as maids and plantation workers under a new Malaysian labour policy created following a riot at a textile factory.
Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi says Indonesians will be replaced in other sectors with workers from other countries in the regions.
He says Indonesians were previously employed in almost all sectors, and those currently working can continue until their permits expire, but then they have to go.
The minister says factory owners have been told to use more automation and end their dependence on labourers because the new policy will limit the number of foreign workers in the country.
The government was angered by a riot by 400 Indonesian textile workers at their factory over drug tests on January 17 followed by a rampage by more than 70 Indonesian construction workers armed with machetes in a suburb south of Kuala Lumpur.
