US President endorses South Korea's sunshine policy

The United States President, George W-Bush, has endorsed the so-called Sunshine Policy of South Korea's President, Kim Dae-Jung, aimed at bringing North Korea out of isolation.

During a summit meeting at the South Korean President's official residence, Mr Bush confirmed that the two leaders discussed North Korea.

Mr Bush said he made it very clear to Mr Kim that Washington supported the Sunshine policy.

While reiterating his offer for dialogue with North Korea, Mr Bush again accused the North Korean leadership of mistreating the country's people.

But, he said the United States would not invade the North .. more from North Asia correspondent, Mark Simkin:

"Kim Dae-Jung has been pursuing a "sunshine policy" of increased engagement with North Korea. George Bush on the other hand has described the North as part of an "axis of evil", determined to develop weapons of mass destruction. That hardline approach has upset many in the South, who believe it has increased tensions on the peninsula. Several demonstrations have been held in Seoul to protest Mr Bush's arrival and a government lawmaker has denounced him as "evil in carnate."
