People smuggling conference set to conclude in Bali

A people-smuggling conference on the Indonesian island of Bali is set to conclude today with calls for stronger regional action to fight traffickers.

Graeme Dobell reports the co-chairs of the meeting, Australia and Indonesia, are to make a joint statement on the consensus of the talks involving more than 50-countries:

"Working groups are to be created to get a more coherent approach to tracking flows of illegal migration and people smuggling over the next 12 months and to get better links between police and legal agencies. Australia says countries without laws against people trafficking are considering legislation. The Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, says the issue has moved up the international agenda and the Bali conference has shown a new regional consensus on confronting people smuggling: "And that's one of the really good things about this joint approach by Australia and Indonesia in hosting this people smuggling conference. I mean it really is helping to ensure that the region doesn't let get itself back into the position that it's found itself into now."
